Being from a small town shouldn’t stop children from achieving their dreams, NBA player Corey Brewer said.

A Portland native, Brewer spoke with youngsters at the Portland Public Library on Friday. The 29-year-old recently signed a $24 million contract with the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association.

“To be honest I didn’t really think ‘I can play in the NBA,’” Brewer said. “My sophomore year in high school, I played summer basketball and went from being not ranked in the country to being ranked top 20 in the country. Then I was like, ‘Hey, I’m not too bad.’ Before that I never thought I’d play in the NBA.
